San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the main gateway into Costa Rica, and plenty of travellers land there before heading to the Pacific coast. It is a four-and-a-half hour drive to Sámara - a long way in a shared shuttle, and a very easy one in a private van.

Yes - on a drive this long we usually recommend one stop for food and a stretch. It is included, not extra.
