Getting around Costa Rica: private transfer, shuttle or rental car?

Costa Rica is compact but its roads can be slow, winding and occasionally rough. How you get around shapes the whole trip - so here's an honest look at the three main options, including where each one genuinely wins.

Private transfer

A private transfer is your own vehicle and driver, door to door, at a fixed price agreed up front. No timetables, no strangers, no navigating unfamiliar roads after a long flight.

It's the most comfortable option, and for two or more people it's often the best value too - the price is for the vehicle, not per head, so a family of four pays the same as a couple. You also skip the rental extras: no mandatory insurance, no car seats to hire, no fuel, no parking, no deposit on your credit card.

Best for: beach holidays, families, arriving and departing, anyone who wants to land and relax.

Shared shuttle

Shared shuttles pool several parties into one van on set routes at set times. They're the cheapest option for a solo traveller, and they run the main tourist corridors reliably.

The trade-offs are time and control: you travel when the schedule says, you may wait for other passengers, and the van will often detour to several hotels before yours. On a long route that can add well over an hour.

Best for: solo travellers and budget-first couples who are flexible on timing.

Rental car

A rental gives you total freedom, which is genuinely wonderful for slow, exploratory trips into the backcountry.

The catches are worth knowing before you book. Costa Rican law requires a mandatory liability insurance that is rarely included in the headline online price, so the real cost is usually well above the quote. Roads range from smooth highway to unmarked gravel, and in the dry-forest backcountry - including some routes near Sámara - a river crossing is a real possibility in the wet months. Add night driving, unfamiliar signage and parking, and the "freedom" can start to feel like work.

Best for: confident drivers on longer, go-anywhere itineraries who want to stop wherever they like.

A quick cost reality check

The comparison people forget: a rental car's true cost is the daily rate plus mandatory insurance, fuel, parking and any car seats - and on a beach holiday it then sits unused outside your hotel for most of the week. If you're mainly staying in one place with a couple of day trips, transfers plus the occasional tour almost always work out simpler, and frequently cheaper.
